Applying Floodplain Inundation Modeling to Estimate Suitable Spawning Habitat and Recruitment Success for Alligator Gar in the Guadalupe River, Texas

We developed a floodplain inundation model to extract specific flood extent and depth parameters combined these with vegetation land cover historic flow data quantify spatial habitat suitability temporal hydrologic metrics that support Alligator Gar Atractosteus spatula spawning within 257 km segment of the lower Guadalupe River, Texas, USA. modeled nine flows across range frequency recurrence intervals from m3s−1 ~4997 estimated availability suitable water depths (0.2 2 m) lateral connectedness between river landcover types. ages via otoliths 95 collected in reach determine year they were recruited into system. analyzed total 30 Indicators Hydrologic Alteration examine how spatially derived habitats related aspects occurrence during season for period record April–July (1935–2020) years spanning recruitment (1981–2010).
